Not only is this a beautifully written account of the journey of a remarkable woman & her family but also a story told in such a way that it leaves me wanting to read more ! Mourka is a truly spirited writer who has the ability to stir emotions in all directions ! She is humourous, sad, witty, sassy, deeply sensitive & right-fully rebellious against all the injustices she experiences ~

Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s and knowing the term D P’s, that was used to describe refugees from Europe, I could not put down Margarita Meyendorff’s book.
Her family history, the incredible reversal of fortune and her determined wondering spirit and her struggle to find her own path in a world torn apart and bruised by events constantly unfolding. The way her voice comes through, with an honesty and desire to tell the story of her life, one filled with loves humor and tragedy that would tell her that theatre was to be her muse. I loved it and I hope that she has more in store for us.
5.0 out of 5 stars fascinating and quite poignant

DP is an enchanting and beautiful book. I found the historic aspects of the book to be quite interesting. The Baron and his tragic wife are fascinating and quite poignant but my heart was with their brave daughter Mourka. How can you not love someone who frantically does Luigi jazz warm-ups on a cold early morning in Russia in order to stave off a panic attack? Well done!

I read this book in 2 days. As a lover of History and a friend of Mourka’s I just found this so well done and totally interesting. DP is also very timely with all that is going on with refugees at this time. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

This is a memoir based on the personal memories of the author and the letter and journals of her parents and interviews with relatives about being born a Russian aristocrat and fleeing the Bolshevik revolution and moving from country to country and then many times within the country where you settle and never finding home.

Truly a very interesting and well written story. Such a great read on a cold night and it would expose people to the plight of
refugees from other parts of the world. As far as I am concerned, this book deserves to be way up on the list!5.0 out of 5 stars

Format: Paperback|Verified PurchaseMs. Meyendorff’s narrative is both awe inspiring and beautiful. She weaves a web of authenticity and vulnerability that proves to be a candid look at the life of one woman’s journey to maintain her Russian heritage while assimilating into American culture. Utilizing her unique gypsy flair, Meyendorff allows the reader to experience the trials of her unique childhood, bearing the burdens of a displaced person’s search for her true identity, while attempting to fit into the “norms” of an ever transitioning society. This book is a must read which leaves one with the knowledge that life must be lived with perseverance and compassion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating on so many levels
By a reader & listener on December 7, 2016
Format: Kindle EditionA beautiful book about a tumultuous life. Margarita Meyendorff’s memoir tells so many stories: the political upheavals of the 20th century and the personal consequences of growing up displaced, the rebellions of a lonely child surrounded by despair, the healing spark of creativity, the hilarious horrors of ’70s theatre, and the true meaning of home. The writing is beautiful, and so is the thirst for life that keeps “Mourka” moving forward, whatever fate throws in her path. An addictive read!
5.0 out of 5 stars She digs deeply and shares so much with her reader.
ByBetsy Tuelon December 6, 2016
Format: Kindle EditionI highly recommend this excellently written memoir of Mourka’s journey as a person displaced from Russia to US when she was three years old and onward through finding of real love. What courage it took for her to face and write down her many experiences. She has had quite a life and lived through many often harrowing as well as joyful experiences and come out the other side. She digs deeply and shares so much with her reader. I am so impressed with her masterful use of English. Do read this fascinating book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Good reading!
ByAnne Pyburn Craigon December 6, 2016
Format: PaperbackAs Mourka writes, which she does lyrically and well, the reader is touched by a portrait of a gifted child who barely had a childhood at all. It was a strange blend of dead-broke hardships and high culture of repeated displacement interspersed with extended family and feasts among fellow White Russians. And just as her parents’ lives were unsprung by the conniptions of Europe, that young girl would find herself caught up in the cultural conniptions of the latter half of the 20th Century in the US of A. Gifted, intense, courageous in spite of herself, Mourka charted a tumultuous course of her own from place to place, buffeted by crisis after crisis, yet always, always drawn to perform and create. Way stations include a topless nightclub and a traveling children’s theatre troupe, Minneapolis and Manhattan, sugar daddies and true loves..

From Mourka’s brother, George
ByAmazon Customeron December 20, 2016
Format: Kindle EditionI am the brother, George. There was much I knew, particularly at the beginning of the book. But what I did not know amazed and awed me. How my little sister managed to overcome the adversity that would overwhelm most people? How little I knew about her suffering after our lives separated for many years? I too could not put the book down once I started it. Bravo, Mourechka. Well done. I hope you have now found peace and joy.
